Class of 2012 - and a cake fail!

Well, this was the semester I was supposed to be graduating, but life stepped in and now I have to wait until December. Luckily for my boyfriend, though, he is now a college graduate! I had high hopes of making a pretty cake for him, but decided to try a buttercream transfer that didn't work out too well:

This is what the logo was supposed to look like
...Yeeeah. I would have been much better off drawing it free hand. It looked great on the parchment paper until I went to transfer it onto the cake, and it crumbled on me and started to stain the fondant. Ugh.

This was my first tiered cake and third time using fondant, so I think the rest of the cake looks decent. I was able to fix the bad logo by doing this:

Ta da! Nothing a little 180 degree turn couldn't fix! I would have done something to the front but I was running out of time. Oh well, his birthday is coming up in June so I'll be able to redeem myself then!

I am so proud of my boyfriend for graduating! He is so talented and succeeds at everything he puts his mind to. In the past couple years, I've seen his artwork improve so much. His work is hanging up in a local froyo shop, was published in a book, put in the newspaper, and was on display at the UNCW Senior exhibit. Yay, Josh!

The pamphlet from the show with his artist's statement:

I just found out yesterday that the summer semester starts Thursday, and I am not prepared at all. Whoops. Hopefully I'll be feeling well enough to bring my GPA back up, get a job, and work on photography this summer! Only 7 more months until I graduate!

Some new baked goods!

I tried using fondant again and I'm starting to get the hang of it! I made a simple white cake with a little bow on it that I think turned out pretty cute. :) I know, I know, it looks like a hat LOL! It's because I only had a white cake base to use!

I also made some cupcakes with the leftover batter.

And some with my favorite rainbow sprinkles:

Also, this is another delicious lemonade cake. I will be making another one for Josh's graduation coming up next week!

My first fondant experience

I suppose if I want to one day have a successful blog, then I should probably start posting blogs... That makes sense, right? Well I went back to Cary to see my family for Easter and they wanted me to make my famous lemon cake. My boyfriend gave me some cake decorating supplies for my birthday, including a fondant roller and some gum paste tools. I've never used fondant in my life, but decided to test my skills on a cake that only my family would see if it turned out awful. At least I knew it would taste good no matter what! :)
I think it turned out alright! I definitely have a lot to learning to do, and I'm hoping I can take some cake decorating classes once I graduate. The pictures are taken with my cell phone because I forgot to bring my camera with me.

Happy Easter!

Why you should not let the best man come to your engagement session...

Or another title - Why you should not let your boyfriend assist you during photoshoots.

Just kidding. I love this guy. He can lighten up any mood and can make the best out of any situation. Today was no exception. I haven't done a photoshoot in a long time, and yesterday I blacked out and busted my eyelid open, so I wasn't exactly on my game today. A friend of ours is getting married and wanted us to get some shots at the arboretum and beach. Josh is a creative guy and likes to take pictures as well, and he is also the best man. These are the results.
